Please take a moment to read through this handbook. We know you will find the information helpful. We've tried to think of everything you may have questions about! Thanks for reading it thoroughly!
Hours: Second Grade begins at 8:00 a.m. and ends at 2:30 p.m.
Arrival: All 2nd graders line up at the 2nd grade doors on the East Playground. The playground is supervised between 7:50-8:00am.
Dismissal: Second graders are dismissed out to the front of the building. You can either park in the parking lot and pick up your child in the 2nd grade line or pick up your child in the drive through.
If your child is not to go home the way he/she "usually" does, you must notify us either by note or by calling the office. Please do not have your child tell us. This is especially important if you regularly pick up your child and someone else is going to pick him/her up instead. If we are not notified, we will not release your child with anyone without your verbal or written permission.
Specials Schedules: All Music, Art and P.E. classes are 45 minutes in length and follow the district ABC schedule. On the days your child has P.E., please be sure to have your child wear gym shoes (no sandals, Crocs, Clogs, etc.)
Specials Rotation Schedule:
Arena: Music, Art, P.E.
Holst: Art, P.E., Music
Snacks:
Please pack snacks for your child every day. It is your child's choice whether or not he/she eats his/her snack; we will not require them to eat their snack. We have snack time at 9:45 a.m. during recess. We ask you to send in a small, easy to open, and nutritious snacks for your child that will fuel them for a full day of learning! Due to the high number of life threatening allergies, it is our policy that your child not share or trade food with his/her classmates and that snacks do not contain peanuts or tree nuts. Both second grade classrooms are nut-free.
Recess: Children will have recess twice every day. In severe weather recess will be held indoors. We will be going outside everyday unless it is raining hard or the temperature is below 20 degrees outside. Please be sure your child is dressed appropriately for the weather. Please mark names in your child's clothing and backpacks! Items left in the classroom at the end of the day can be retrieved in the school's lost and found area.
Birthdays: We love to celebrate birthdays in the classroom! We have classroom rituals to honor the birthday child. and you may send a small, easy-to-eat and distribute snack as long as it is nut free.
We do ask that all birthday correspondence, including party invitations or thank you notes, be handled outside of school. Handing our party invitations or thank you notes not only takes up class time, but hurts the feelings of children who may not have been invited. We are also unable to provide class lists for birthday party invitations due to district privacy rules. Thank you for understanding and supporting our inclusive school community.
Class Parties: Class parties will be held at Halloween, Winter Break, and Valentine’s Day. Watch our weekly correspondence for volunteer opportunities for these events.
Attendance: Prompt, regular attendance is an important ‘good habit’ to get started now. Attendance is taken by 8:05 a.m. If your child must miss school, please call the office before school begins. If you do not call the office, you will receive a call you to ask why your child is not in school. This is for the safety of your child.
There are times when you should keep your child home. If your child is ill, please keep him/her home from school. Be alert to such symptoms as upset stomach, runny nose, fever, earache or sore throat. Your child does need to be fever free for 24 hours before they can be at school. If children are well enough to attend school, they will be expected to participate in all activities including P.E. and recess. If your child becomes ill at school, we’ll send him/her to the health room. If their illness or injury requires treatment, you will be called. It is very important that you keep up-to-date any numbers where we might reach you in case of emergency.
Tardies: We ask that parents to please adhere to the attendance policy and arrive at school on time. All children who are tardy must enter the building through the main entrance and sign in at the front office.
Communication: We’ll have meetings, parent/teacher conferences, and whatever is necessary to keep you informed and aware of how your child is doing in school. Formal Parent/Teacher Conferences are scheduled in October and February. Report Cards come home each trimester. Your child will bring home a Homework Folder each day. This is used for bringing work home and returning homework and will also contain school communications. Please help your child get in the habit of bringing this folder to and from school.
Discipline: We work to establish a classroom community based upon mutual respect, compassion, safety. We help the children to learn how to self-monitor their behavior and use problem solving strategies when solving problems. An email or phone call will be made home to parents depending on the severity of the issue or situation. The principal is involved when any inappropriate verbal or physical behavior arises. The principal will communicate with parents in regards to any office outings.
Toys: Toys are NOT allowed in school. We ask that the students leave them at home so that they aren’t a distraction and they don’t get lost.
