Second grade writers become more sophisticated with developing their craft. They develop strategies to create stories to write, and write long and strong. They carefully analyze the work of published authors, and try to use some of those writing techniques in their own pieces. The students are taught specific strategies related to structure, development, language conventions, and editing. Second graders also write for a variety of purposes (persuade, inform, entertain). We use the Lucy Calkins Units of Study for Writing as our primary curriculum. These units of study include:
- Improving Narrative Craft
- How to Write Nonfiction
- Writing About Reading (Opinion)
- Lab Reports/Science Books
- Poetry
