Field Day Information from Mrs. Graham for Monday: FIELD DAY, MONDAY, MAY 20th 2019 8:35-10:50 Volunteers Needed Dear Parents: Field Day is a time when the students participate in fun culminating physical activities, learned in PE this year. It promotes good sportsmanship and teamwork. It is also a fun way to celebrate the end of the year as a community. Below are some tips to help make Field Day fun and safe for your child. Field Day will be held on, Monday, May 20th Please dress your children in colored t-shirts according to grade level. This will help with organization during Field Day.. KAM-1- Yellow. 2-3- Red. 4-5- Blue. Please keep in mind our Colorado weather to help your child dress appropriately. There will be many water stations; your child may want to wear clothes that can get wet (swimming suits are allowed under clothing). Teachers or staff members cannot provide or apply sunscreen to anyone, so please apply sunscreen at home. Hats and filled water bottles will help protect your child. All items left on the field will be put in the lost and found. *We are in need of many volunteers to help with Field Day. Mrs. Arena's class will participate from 1-1:30 and Mrs. McCleskey's will participate from 1:30-2:00. Woo Hoo! Tuesday is Game Day! Your child can bring his or her favorite game to share with the class (board or card games only, please)! Be sure to label games with your family name. Wednesday is our Picnic at the Park! We will walk to Scott Carpenter park, leaving here at 9:30. Chaperones can plan to be here about 15 minutes early. We need wagons to help carry the lunches and water bottles. If you have one we can borrow, will you please email your child's teacher?! Thank you! Kids will also need to remember to bring a sack lunch for Wednesday. Thursday is Beach Day! To celebrate the last day of school we will have a beach day! The kids can wear "beach-y clothes" (no swimsuits, please). We will also do "beach reading." Please send your child to school with a towel, sunglasses, and a sunhat. Math Extensions: Our math extensions will continue into next week - this time they will choose one area of focus for four lessons. Kids will choose between math art, math building, Rubik's cube exploration, or math games! We Need Your Help!: We need the help of parents who are doctors or who know a good deal about digestive health (due to a chronic condition etc.) We would love for you to come visit and share during our Digestive System Project Based Learning Unit we will be doing from May 6th - May 17th. Math Extensions: This week we finished up our Math Expressions curriculum! We will be doing 2 weeks of math extensions: math building, math puzzles, math art, and Rubik's cubes! Our goal is for kids to see math everywhere - not just in a pen to paper algorithm. 4/12 and 4/15: NO SCHOOL Science Biographies: In Science we are switching gears to learn about 4 famous scientists: Florence Nightingale, Anton van Leeuwenhoek, Elijah McCoy, and Daniel Hale Williams. Ancient China and India: In Social Studies the kids are learning about other ancient civilizations to piggyback on our Ancient Greece unit. They will learn about the geography, religions, and philosophies of these civilizations. Poetry: This week we had a guest poet, Erin Robertson, come in to share about her career as a poet and to write with the kids. The kids all wrote a poem that we will carry in our pockets next Thursday for the national "poem in your pocket day!" Homework: Each and every day: 30 minutes of reading from a "just right" book! Monday: NO SCHOOL Tuesday: 7-2 continued Wednesday: Play a game of War, Uno, SkipBo, Phase 10 or any other strategy game your family loves. Thursday: 7-3 Important Dates:
4/12 and 4/15: NO SCHOOL Healthy Living: This week and next we are covering the Health standards in Science. Please continue to talk with your child about healthy food choices, exercise, limiting screen time, fire safety, and tobacco prevention. We will cover all of these items briefly, but kids might need more time to process what they are learning at home. Ancient China and India: In Social Studies the kids are learning about other ancient civilizations to piggyback on our Ancient Greece unit. They will learn about the geography, religions, and philosophies of these civilizations. Math Unit 7: We will begin Unit 7 next week where we will focus on area, perimeter, arrays, and fractions. Poetry: In writing, the kids are becoming poets. They are writing about strong feelings with concrete details. We have a guest poet coming next week to help support our writing. March 25th-29th - Spring Break! Greek Plays Thank you, thank you, thank you to everyone for coming to our Greek Plays on Tuesday! The kids were all so proud to perform for you all. Weren't they great?! Janet Stevens Visit Ask your second grader about the visit from local author, Janet Stevens! She shared with us how she gets her ideas, how she works on the books, and how they get published. Stop by the hallway sometime to see the artwork we co-created with her! Fun Run Fundraiser! Thank you for your support of High Peaks through the Fun Run fundraiser, the kids ran their little hearts out. It was a great morning in the sun! Homework: Spring Break Reading Bingo! Read, read, read, and there will be some (small) prizes for returning with a Bingo! Important Dates:
March 19th - Greek Plays 5:30 pm. March 21st - Fun Run! March 25th-29th - Spring Break! Greek Plays on Tuesday! We are so excited to perform our Greek plays for families on Tuesday evening in the cafeteria. Kids need to wear white shirts and black pants, unless you want to create a more elaborate Grecian costume for your child's role. This is up to parent discretion. We know it is short notice, and white shirts with black pants will look sharp, too! Fun Run Fundraiser! Please make sure to ask for lap donations for the Fun Run. We are excited to raise money and make our school the best place it can be, and to get some exercise in the process! Homework: Due to the snow day and challenging lessons, we have slowed significantly on this unit. Please note the changes to the homework, you might have already completed some last week. 3/19: Greek plays 5:30 pm Ancient Greece Mark your calendars for the evening of Tuesday, March 19th. Second graders will be performing Greek plays at 5:30! Greek Olympics in PE The students had a great time participating in the Greek Olympics during PE. Ms. Graham did an incredible job of organizing it for us, be sure to thank her the next time you see her! Another big thanks to all of the parents that helped out at the events, we appreciate you! Homework: Reading - 30 minutes every night from a "just-right" book. If your child is having a hard time finding an appropriate level book, remind them of the 5 finger rule!
